John Horgan, PhD, is professor of security studies at the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, where he is also the director of the Center for Terrorism and Security Studies. The Castleisland native is an applied psychologist whose research focuses on terrorist behavior.
He has more than 70 publications on terrorism and political violence. He is also a member of the Research Working Group of the FBI’s National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime. His research has been featured in The New York Times, CNN, Rolling Stone Magazine and the Chronicle of Higher Education.
John Horgan’s roots are firmly planted in Castleisland and in Caherciveen. He is a son of Tim and Jean (Hewitt) Horgan and a brother of the locally based Ruth Lyons and Martin Horgan.
Tonight at 10pm he will be involved in an hour long TV3 documentary on the violence being waged on the world by Islamic extremists.
Terrorist attacks by Islamic extremists are regarded as one of the biggest threats to international security and the documentary asks why they are happening and who exactly is responsible.
It will focus in particular on the growing numbers of people travelling from all around the world to fight in the conflicts in Syria, Iraq and North Africa, and features contributions from the fighters themselves, the Muslim community in Ireland, the Justice and Equality minister Frances Fitzgerald and a range of experts from home and abroad.
