Sliabh Luachra Drama Group Tribute
Beyond family circles, John Joe will be best remembered as a member of the Scart based Sliabh Luachra Drama Group.
A devoted member of the group, he enjoyed both on-stage and backroom roles and this included prop making and maintenance and he was president of the group up to the time of his passing at the weekend.
In a tribute to their longest serving member, the group expressed its sadness at the news with the following post on its Facebook page.
99th Birthday Wishes
“It was with great sadness that we woke up to news that our dear friend and President of the Sliabh Luachra Drama Group had passed away. It was only a few short weeks ago here that we wished him a very special 99th birthday.
John Joe a founding member of the group, was an integral part of our success. His kind, gentle, wit and knowledge made him truly a unique character often entertaining many with his lengthy recitations in which not a word would be missed!
Calm and Solid Approach
His calm and solid approach to everything in his life made him the perfect companion, his roguish smile lighting up any conversation.
John Joe eagerly awaited the chosen script of the group every year right up to recent years and would love to sit down and study it in the months before the play was staged.
He acted in many a play himself including: Moll; The Cobwebs Glory to mention a few; however it was sharing the stage with his grandson Seán in Dancing at Luaghnasa in 2005 that was truly a very proud moment for John Joe – as in the final night photograph above.
Props Still in Use
His gifted hands made many a prop for our stage and no matter what he put his hands to, it was tastefully done with great care and attention.
Many of John Joe’s props that we use today will hold precious sentimental value for many years to come.
John Joe you will be deeply missed by everyone in the group, we hold the fondest of memories and we would not be where we are today without your love and passion for drama.
You have left an everlasting impression that we are most grateful for.
I am sure your fellow thespians from the group that have sadly passed before you are waiting patiently with a new script for you to read.
We have lost a dear friend and a unique gentleman, but heaven is rejoicing having gained one of the best.”
