There must be near a century of layers of recorded music and song from the Sliabh Luachra area in the RTÉ archives by now.

Another layer will be added in Scartaglin tonight when the station’s representatives will record the unveiling of the Handed Down Sliabh Luachra Online Archive from 8pm in the local culture and heritage centre.

This event will herald the return of the World Fiddle Day Scartaglen 2022 celebrations scheduled to run over the weekend tonight, tomorrow and tomorrow night Saturday 21st with music sessions in both Scart and Castleisland on both nights.

All Corners of the World

The event is attracting Sliabh Luachra music and culture addicts from all corners of the world with: Holland, Korea, the USA, Japan, Great Britian and the rest of Ireland just some of those mentioned.

This is no surprise as fans had been travelling from these quarters since the event was founded in 2013 and they haven’t lost the homing instincts in spite of the restrictions imposed by the pandemic.

“We will open the festival, on Friday May 20th at 8pm, with the official launch of the Handed Down Sliabh Luachra Online Archive,” said founder member, P.J. Teahan.

Session Break Out

“The archive, which was aided by funding from The Arts Council of Ireland, Creative Ireland, Kerry ETB and Kerry Co. Council, will be launched by Liam O’Connor, director of the Irish Traditional Music Archive,” said PJ.

There will be sessions in Scart and Castleisland over both nights and there’s a bus tour of significant locations in the story of the music of the mountains and the valleys.
