Tom McCarthy’s / St Mary’s 2:  55 Points – St Joseph’s Athea: 48 Points

On Sunday,  March 9th in the ‘Pres Gym’ in Killarney, Tom McCarthy’s / St. Mary’s 2 played St. Joseph’s Athea in a thrilling county basketball final in front of a large crowd.

In a tightly fought contest, it was clear that this game would go down to the wire and it did. With only a point separating the teams at half time on a score of 26-25 in favour of St Joseph’s, it took the experience and coaching skills of the big centre, Maurice Casey to swing the game around in favour of ‘The Islanders’.

“St. Mary’s kept one step ahead and won the game on a score of 55-48 – and Maurice Casey also took the M.V.P. award.”

With Joseph’s in early foul trouble, Ian Geaney and Maurice Casey struck for vital baskets. Even so, the Athea side were starting to claw their way back into the game. However, St. Mary’s kept one step ahead and won the game on a score of 55-48 – and Maurice Casey also took the M.V.P. award. Congratulations from all the team to Neilus and Ruth Lyons on the birth of their baby boy, Adam.
