The hoarding around the abandoned, derelict site on the Limerick Road looked in rude, good health last summer when it was viewed by the Tidy Towns adjudicators. Even so they cast a cold eye on it and the impression of the town it created for visitors. Though it’s not near as busy as it used to be in the pre- bypass days, the road is still used quite a lot by tourist traffic. The hoarding shut off the view of the site of the old Ahern’s Garage from the Limerick Road approach and, while it was anything but state-of-the-art, its present condition is nothing short of a disgrace.

Hurricane Damage

Since the January hurricane it stands – or lies – as a woeful disservice to the town and its Tidy Towns Committee. Now Cllr. Bobby O’Connell has taken on the task of getting it sorted. Cllr O’Connell asked at a recent meeting of the council that:  “Kerry County Council get the owners of the site on the Limerick Road to clean it up and make it presentable.” The reply to Cllr. O’Connell’s motion went: “Our derelict sites officer has been in contact with the receivers who are responsible for this site. A scope of works has been agreed to remedy the issues. The receivers have given a written undertaking to carry out the works and it is expected that work will commence on the site in the near future.”
