What a year it’s been to date for Kilmurry National School pupil, Kayla O’Connor. In April she was a ‘Golden Ball’ MVP winner when her St. Mary’s Basketball team won the All-Ireland Club U-14 title at Castleisland Community Centre – home advantage having been won on the court – with a huge contribution from Kayla.
Then, just a couple of weeks ago, she received a letter she had really been waiting for. Cumann Na mBunscoil secretary, Mairead O’Callaghan informed her that she had been selected to play on the Kerry U-14 team in the INTO/ GAA Respect Exhibition Go-Games 2104 at half time in the Kerry V Mayo All-Ireland Senior Football semi-final in Croke Park on this Sunday, August 24th.
“I was delighted to be picked and I can’t wait to play on the pitch at Croke Park,” said Kayla – a keen footballer.
But that’s not all: Kayla, a daughter of George and Norma, picked up a Gold Medal in the All-Ireland Community Games athletics finals with the Kerry U-14 Cross-Country team in Athlone at the weekend. Her team-mates on the occasion were:
Fiona Doyle, Shona O Brien, Diana Nagle, Katie Palmer and Cara Daly.
Good luck to Kayla and her team-mates in Croke Park on Sunday.
We clearly have the makings of a brilliant, dedicated and all-round sportswoman in our midst.
