On Private Members Business in Dail Eireann recently, Deputy Tom Fleming moved a motion regarding the provision of appropriate services and supports from various government departments to enable senior citizens to have quality life in their own home and in the community.

The government did not oppose the motion and it was passed unanimously following a three-hour debate which is a rare occurrence in Private Members Business motions.

The motion is timely in view of the forthcoming budget and it is an acknowledgement of the need to address all the various issues raised in the motion.

Deputy Fleming and fellow members of the Dáil Independent Technical Group introduced the motion and several Dáil members across the political divide supported it. Government Ministers who addressed the various issues included:  Tánaiste & Minister for Social Protection, Ms. John Burton, Ministers of State Deputies Kathleen Lynch TD, Aodhán O’Riordáin TD and Damien English TD.
