It’s many years since a national title came to Kerry Macra but Christine Buckley of Killeentierna Macra na Feirme Club has changed that. Over the weekend the Firies woman with strong Scartaglin connections was crowned Queen of the Land 2015 in Tullamore.

The three-day event saw Christine, a primary school teacher in Anabla National School in Kilcummin, take part in fun activities such as: Casino Night; visiting local attractions in Tullamore and taking part in private and stage interviews.

“All in Kerry Macra are delighted for Christine and want to send her a massive message of congratulations,” said spokesperson, Theresa O’Shea. Christine is into baking and all sports including football, cycling and running.

“We may not have won the Sam Maguire Cup this year but Christine has certainly made up for that!

“A home coming is being planned. Celebrations on this Friday night, November 20th will centre in Hughes’ Bar in Cordal and everyone is welcome to attend whether you are a Macra club member or not.

“Kerry Macra also wish to congratulate Mags Kelleher of Avondhu Macra and Angneiszka Urbaniak of Mayo Macra on coming second and third respectively.

“Kerry Macra would like to say well done to Mid Kerry Macra on finishing in the top ten in the national finals of the bowling competition which was also held in Tullamore over the weekend,” Theresa concluded.

The WR Shaw Queen of the Land Festival is a Macra na Feirme run festival celebrating the talents and achievements of its members. Featuring contestants from at home and abroad, the festival runs over three days drawing Macra na Feirme members and non-members from all over the country to Tullamore for the weekend. The recent festival celebrated its 51st year in existence!
