The death has occurred of Sr. Rita Donegan, (91) Presentation Convent, Castleisland and Causeway.
Many people who went to school and learned music in the Presentation Convent in the 1960 and 70s’ will remember St. Rita.
I remember being in a really cosy class with her as teacher in high infants or so. The class-room was over on the left hand side and just off the yard. There were briars and nettles and trees growing up around the windows looking out on the field at the back of the house where Dr. Collins lived on Church Street. When it rained, or the wind blew, that sense of cosiness was heightened.
I remember her as one of the great teachers. She had that way about her. And while she could make a face at you as good as any other, there was great warmth about her and even in her voice. She also seemed to have a higher tolerance level for traits of character or roguery in her pupils.
Sr. Rita Donegan was the organist at the Church of Saints Stephen and John here in Castleisland from the late 1960s to her retirement from the role in 2001. May God be good to her.
