Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Lá Na gClub

As part of Lá na gClub 2016 celebrations, the club is organising a get together to celebrate the achievements of the 1988 to 1996 teams. In that eight year period they had phenomenal success, winning Division 3 & 2 of the county league, thus gaining promotion to Division 1 for the first time ever; They also won the County Junior Championship and contested four County Intermediate finals in six years-winning two and narrowly losing the other two.
That successful period in the club’s history certainly laid the foundations for where the club is today. To recognise that success the club has organised a reunion buffet, with live music and late bar
on Saturday, May 7th at Faha Court Hotel at 8pm.
If you have any memorabilia -photographs, match reports, programmes etc., from any year, we would be very grateful if you forwarded them to us. We hope to put a slideshow together for this momentous occasion. Please contact Mike Carroll on 087 22 56 548 or mikecarroll@eircom.ie All memorabilia will be returned to you on the night.

Round 1- Senior Club Championship
In a very competitive game on Saturday evening in Connolly Park, Milltown /Castlemaine seniors lost out to Austin Stacks by 4 points -on a score line of 13 points to 9. Stacks late surge -which saw them kick 5 of the last 7 points in the final 14 minutes, got them over the line with Milltown Castlemaine still in the game right up to the end.
In the first half, Stacks got off to a quick start -scoring 3 points within 7 minutes. Jonathan O’ Sullivan and Pa Wrenn popped over a couple of points to leave the minimum between the sides after a quarter of an hour. Gavin Horan was one on one with the Austin Stacks keeper – but a poor call from the referee to stop play for a free, meant that it could have have been quite a different score going in at half time. A point on the 29 th minute by Daniel Bohane left the score 6 points to 4 -to the Stacks at half time.
The Stacks got off to a good start again in the second half-going 8 points to 4 up after 7 minutes. Jonathan O’ Sullivan popped over 2 quick frees, followed by an excellent Shane Murphy point. Before that Gavin Horan- with his forceful running almost netted -but the Stacks keeper got a hand to it, for an excellent save. At this stage Milltown Castlemaine were dominating the breaks but Stacks crowded the defence and had a couple of turnovers leading to quick counter attacks -that proved to be the turning point. By the 25th minute, Stacks went 11 points to 7 up and our lads tried gallantly with 2 more scores but Stacks ‘keep the ball’ approach saw them over the line. There were some excellent performances over the pitch -none more so than from 2 veterans -Mike Burke and Damian Murphy, who were outstanding.
Scorers on the night were Jonathan O’ Sullivan-six points, Pa Wrenn, Shane Murphy and Jack McCarthy one point each. Well done to Mike Hickey and his management team and to the entire panel of players.
