Máire Holmes is the newly re-appointed Kerry County Council Writer in Residence – a position which is co-funded by the Arts Council of Ireland.
Máire has a lifetime’s experience in literature. She is the author of many poetry books and plays. She has been writer in residence in Mayo, Connemara and the Aran Islands, and most recently in Kerry in 2015.
She is an experienced facilitator of all ages and levels and is a recipient of many arts awards and an MA in Writing from NUIG.
Poem on Plaque
In April 2016 her poem Margadh was unveiled on a plaque on Church Yard Street, Galway during the Cúirt International Festival of Literature.
Máire’s plan for the residency is to make a one hour radio programme Kerry 1916 – 2016: From Wireless to WiFi based on writings produced by the people of Kerry during the residency.
People of All Ages
For the project Máire will work with people of all ages to cover a wide range of themes: historical, emotional, aesthetical, sporting, creative and spiritual.
‘The purpose of creative writing is communication and more so, fulfilment,’ says Máire, ‘and a radio programme can share that which springs from the heart of the writer with the heart of the listener.’
Tá Gaeilge líofa ag Máire
Máire will speak more about the project at Killarney Library on Culture Night, Friday 16th September at 6pm. After a short talk there will be an open mic night hosted by Máire and all are welcome to bring along prose and poetry to read aloud on the night. Tá Gaeilge líofa ag Máire agus tá fíor fáilte romhat dul i dteangmháil le Máire as Gaeilge más mian leat.
