“President Michael D. Higgins is over-stepping his role by getting involved in the climate action debate where he is advising people to eat more plant based food and change their diet,” said Deputy Danny Healy Rae.
His statement came in response to an inclusion in a speech made by President Higgins at the National Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska, Co. Laois this week.
Cheap Food Policy
President Higgins criticised what he labelled a ‘cheap food policy’ while urging people to support those who produce sustainable foods.
“I’ve always eaten quite a lot of fish and everybody is going to have to change their diets,” he suggested.
Irish Farm Produce
Deputy Danny Healy Rae said that farmers in Ireland are producing the very best beef, lamb and pork in the world.
“It’s a bit rich of both President Higgins and Tánaiste Micheál Martin being concerned about a shortage of food and global food security when both of them are trying to cut food production in Ireland, who do they think they are codding ? Deputy Healy Rae concluded with a piscatorial quip.
