Two Presentation Secondary School, Castleisland students, Charlotte Meyer and Sofia Perez reached the regional finals of this year’s Action Aid Ireland speech competition.

They entered and delivered their speeches on Agroecology and Gender Based Violence and both students were highly commended for their research and effort.

‘ActionAid’ works globally with women and children who are excluded in society and who live in extreme poverty.

Holding Governments to Account

The organisation endeavours to hold governments and international institutions to account while campaigning to achieve long-term change towards a more just world.

Each year ‘Action Aid Ireland’ run a speech competition for schools which aims to educate young people about worldwide issues concerning women.

This year Charlotte and Sofia reached the regional finals with their speeches and they attracted the attention of Emma Doyle, Action Aid’s communications and campaigns organiser.

Very Well Delivered

“Charlotte’s speech was very well delivered, clearly explaining agroecology and the links between climate change and agriculture,” said Ms. Doyle.

“She did a great job of weaving the issue of women’s rights throughout her speech,” she said.

Turning to Sofia’s speech she said that it was also very well delivered.

“It provided fantastic policy recommendations to solving the issues around gender-based violence.” Ms. Doyle said and she went on to wish Charlotte and Sofia the best of luck in the future and she expressed a hope that they would continue with their interest in global issues.
