Saturday will Host World Fiddle Day Scartaglen Gathering

If it’s music you’re after this weekend and if you’re in the vicinity of Scartaglen and Castleisland you’ll be blessed altogether.

Tonight, at the Sliabh Luachra Heritage Centre in Scart at 8pm RTÉ Radio One will record a special Tell Me About Denis Murphy in which Aoife Nic Cormaic will host of panel of people including Denis Murphy’s nephew, Billy Clifford and Gneeveguilla native Con Moynihan in a discussion in which the plot is revealed in the title.

Tomorrow is the annual World Fiddle Day Scartaglen gathering at the Patrick O’Keeffe monument in the village just before 2pm for the now traditional ‘all in’ photographs and tunes and then the fiddle recital and sessions will prevail in Scart and Castleisland for the rest of the day.

And, as part of the week-long celebrations leading into World Fiddle Day Scartaglen 2024, the Handed Down crew members were delighted to showcase a special online video last Wednesday evening May 15th on YouTube and Facebook. See the link below.
The video has been produced for the Handed Down Sliabh Luachra Archives with contributions from places as diverse as: Peru, Pittsburgh and Ireland.

Early ’60s Lesson from O’Keeffe

The video includes fiddle performances and interviews and it will also unveil a pupil of Pádraig O’Keeffe’s who lives in the US and got a lesson and manuscript from O’Keeffe in Lyons’ Bar Scartaglin in the early 1960s possibly 1961.
The organisers are giving special mention and thanks to Bruce Molyneaux in Pittsburgh, Ronan Redican in Tralee for putting the film together, to Con Moynihan for the interviews and to all the fiddlers who took part.
