Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Breandàn Fitzgerald has expressed his condolences on the passing of legendary commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh.

A native of Dún Síon, he worked as a teacher in Dublin, with his first assignment for RTÉ providing commentary on the 1949 Railway Cup Final on St Patrick’s Day.

The Voice of Sports

“It is very sad news to hear of the passing of Mícheál and I would like to pass on my condolences to his family and many friends,” Cathaoirleach Fitzgerald said.

“For generations of people, Mícheál was the voice of sports in Ireland,  particularly in GAA and they grew up listening to him paint vivid pictures of the action over the airwaves.

Laochra Gael, agus ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís. Comhbhrón ó chroí lena chlann agus a cháirde ar fad. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”
