On the waste-waste issue through many parts of Kerry, Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly, has expressed concern over the announced Shannon to Dublin pipeline project.
Teachta Daly said that many in Kerry could be forgiven for expressing bemusement at the government’s announcement.
“Where there is decent water and wastewater treatment facilities, housing can be built and communities can thrive. Unfortunately the reality in Kerry has been quite the opposite for a number of years,” he said.
“Wastewater treatment is grossly underfunded in the county and the ‘system’, which in many places is simply an ancient Imhoff tank which is totally unsuitable in the 21st century.
State of Water Services
Places such as Abbeydorney, Causeway, Castlegregory, Glenbeigh, Fenit and Ballyduff cannot sustain any reasonable housing or investment, such is the state of their services.
“The expense of the proposed Shannon to Dublin project has meant many are wondering what is the likelihood is of these essential works being completed. If resources are to be constrained or withdrawn, as they already have been in Kerry, that needs to be made clear.
“Investment into water facilities is badly needed but needs to allow for geographic balance. I will be writing to the Minister in relation to the improvements needed once again and asking that he clarifies the government’s plans in this regard,” said Teachta Daly.
