The Ballymacelligott based Fianna Fáil Councillor Fionnán Fitzgerald was elected as Cathaoirleach of the Castleisland Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District on Monday.
Bain sé usáid as ár teanga dhúchais nuar a chuir sé fáilte roimh agus ghabh sé buíochas lena chomhghleacaithe as an onóir ollmhór a bhronn siad air.
“Is onóir agus pribhléid mhór domsa a bheith togtha mar Cathaoirleach Bardasach Oileán Chiarraí agus Corca Dhuibhne. Tugaim mo bhuíochas do gach duine agus grúpa a thug cabhair dom chun an lá seo a shroichint,” arsa Cathaoirleach Fitzgerald.
Setting Out his Stall
Setting out his stall for his term as Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Fitzgerald said he hopes to see the Local Area Plan for Castleisland come into being in the coming months. It is very much needed by everyone in the area of Castleisland.
“I call on all of us to support and push for a full traffic management plan to be drawn up for the town of Castleisland. I call for funding to be gotten for the upgrade of the Water Mains at the top of the town which when it breaks effectively closes down every facet of the town.
Future Development of Farranfore
“I’m calling for The TII in conjunction with Kerry County Council to finalise and publish the preferred route option for the Killarney Bypass which is having a dramatic effect on future development and housing development in the centre of the county – Farranfore. I hope as well to see safety works completed at various danger points on our roads.
“We live in an area rich in culture, music, poetry, art, language and drama. From Tureencahill to Cuas an Bhodaigh tá saibhreas ár gcultúr le blaiseadh go binn. Tá súil agam go leanfaimíd ar aghaidh ag tabhairt gach tacaíocht d’é seo.
Focussing on Issues
“Politics is about focussing on issues and working to get them done. There is a growing concern that politics is a difficult business for the person involved and their families and friends. I have been lucky in my time so far to be able to work with people who have the development of The Castleisland Electoral Area to the forefront of their minds. I have differed with each of them, agreed with each of them but thank them for the professional way that they went about their business. I know and hope that this work ethic continues into the next five years.
Witness Democracy in Action
“I would like our youth in as far as possible to witness democracy in action and call for our schools to be invited to a our Municipal District Meetings.
“This invitation I would like extended to both primary and secondary schools in our area.
“I think it is very important that our youth see politics as a positive force for change in our society, that we show that people can agree and disagree with each other and get the task done and still be able to shake each other’s hands.
Politics is For All of Us
“I would like our youth to see politics as something that they can get involved in to the betterment of themselves and their areas and communities.
“Politics is not for the tough, the teaque, the cute, the slippery, the clever, the one who waits in the long grass, calls immediately for something to be done or hedges their bets to see which way the wind is blowing.
“Politics is for all of us. We must show that politics is not good for any of us unless it is good for all of us.”
