‘A Terrible Bolt from the Blue’

“A terrible bolt from the blue” was how one woman described the just breaking news that Garvan Walsh (44) had died suddenly on Monday morning at home in Kilquane, Cordal.

Greeted with disbelief, the impact and sadness of Garvan’s passing had yet to hit home fully as mourners and sympathisers mingled at the funeral of the late Tom Hughes at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Cordal.

There was a surreal sense of shock as the dreadful news from the nearby Walsh home made its presence felt among the genuinely shaken gathering around the church.

Though only recently returned for a short term break from Sydney, Garvan made good use of his time here and he caught up with his many boyhood friends, colleagues and team-mates from Castleisland Rugby Club.

Several friends recalled meeting and catching up with him over a pint or two in recent weeks and some remember him as a fearless and formidable player and one you’d be lucky to have on your side when it mattered.

May God be good to him and bring comfort to Fiona and Joan and his brothers Patrick and John and their families.
