Transition year students have been asked to become part of a local district heritage project invvhelping to research, archive and digitise records from local primary schools.

This will allow students to see their local history from primary sources and create real connections for them with the past.

In some cases they will be helping to document the handwriting of their own ancestors. Castleisland District Heritage (CDH) has done trojan work in this area already.

Delighted at Opportunities

Transition Year students in St. Pats are delighted to get the opportunity to take part in the project – according to anteacher at the school.

As outlined on the CDH website their aim is to ‘provide an online platform for items of relevant and cultural interest’ and to provide ‘free and open access to the rich store of research material already held in its archives since the foundation of the project in 2014’

The students will also take part in a project, already started, which will create a photographic chronicle of the shop fronts and buildings of Castleisland’s Main Street.

Background Research

“Our Ty students will do further background research on these buildings to help create more depth to the overall project,” said teacher John Forrest.

“This is a great opportunity for students to learn outside the classroom and see how historians record and research old materials. Members of the Castleisland District Heritage recently visited the school to discuss and outline the projects to the participating students,” said Mr. Forrest.
