A very special Lower Main Street, Castleisland lady is celebrating a milestone birthday today.

The Laccabawn born, farmer’s daughter, Mary Fitzgerald became Mary Tangney, a townie and a shopkeeper in one fell swoop when she married the Castleisland based Joe Tangney in 1956.

She became receptionist and sympathiser when people came in the shop door to her with the sad news of a death in their families.

They were there to engage her husband, local carpenter and undertaker Joe to arrange the coffin and funeral for their dearly departed.

Tea and Sympathy

They’d be ushered into the kitchen and comforted and provided with time, tea and sympathy and assured that everything was in safe hands – and it always was – and still is.

Mrs. Tangney is still in that role as sympathetic commander in chief of the Tangney Undertakers business and Bernard learned his trade from the best and most caring in the business.

Happy Special Birthday Mrs. Tangney

Castleisland Parish Priest, Fr. Mossie Brick, in thanking his parish team after local funerals, always lavishes praise on Bernard and his team for the way they handle their business at times when their customers are at a very low point in their lives.

Though her rogue of a son told me her age this morning, I’ve no notion of divulging it here. Happy Special Birthday Mrs. Tangney.
