There was a strong local interest on Saturday evening as TG4 screened the Sigerson Cup colleges final from Belfast. Desmond’s player, Thomas Hickey, son of Tommy and Eileen, was a member of the UCC panel that defeated UUJ in a pulsating final. Although he didn’t get the opportunity to feature on the night he had played in the earlier rounds and richly deserves his medal. The Sigerson Cup is, of course, the most prestigious award in third level colleges sport.
Local GAA historians made the connection all the way back to the mid 1960 and Dr. Dave Geaney who won the coveted medal with UCC then. His younger brother, Dick went on to win two medals in the mid/late 60’s with UCC and that must constitute a family record as their sister Mary also won innumerable colleges awards in a variety of sports.
The search is now for anyone else from the area who has won a Sigerson Cup medal. I would welcome any information that would set the record straight. You can make contact through: 087 2359467
