Fund Razors Break €5K Barrier For Kerry Charity

A highly posted beard and head shave took place on the Saturday night of March 15th at The Kingdom House Bar here in Castleisland.

The event drew a huge attendance as the St. Patrick’s weekend celebrations were getting under way on that weekend.

Last Saturday night, host, Helen Leen and her fellow organisers presented a fine cheque for €5,012-70 to Sheila Power – a committee member of the Kerry branch of Downs Syndrome Ireland.

The main organisers for this event included: Helen Leen of the Kingdom House Bar; local man Peter O’Connor of Dulague and George Glover took on the job of information provider.

Helen and Peter came up with the idea of a head and beard shave and choose Down Syndrome Kerry as the charity. Amongst those participating in the big shave were:  Peter O’Connor, Thomas Callaghan, Tim O’Leary, Tom O’Connor, Dave Curran, Denis Brosnan, Mikey Prendiville, George Glover and members of the O’Connor family.

The event got going around the 9pm mark and it was clear early on that the idea was turning out to be a good one. The main bar was full of weekend revellers and supporters of those waiting to be expertly and rapidly shorn by Pat Scannell of Classic Barbers.

It soon became obvious that the night was an outstanding success.  The  organisers hoped they’d reach the €500 to €1,000 mark.

“We were happy that the figure kept on growing in the weeks after the big night. When it got to €4,400 we thought it wouldn’t go much more and we were absolutely delighted when it passed the €5k mark.  It’s great for all involved and we’re very grateful to the great support we got from our volunteers and from the public,” said Mr. Glover.
