A scam alert – the third in as many weeks in the general locality – has been sounded by gardaí after an unsuspecting member of the public was duped by a conman this Monday afternoon.

Gardaí say the nasty incident occurred in the Scartaglin area between 5pm and 6pm this evening.

The thief posed as a local authority water department official and stole a sum of money from the householder who was shocked by the ordeal.

The culprit is travelling in a 98-C registered grey coloured Toyota Corolla and it could be travelling on any of the network of back roads that lead to and from Scartaglin.

Members of the public have been urged to report any sightings of the vehicle to their local Garda station as soon as possible.

This kind of scam is going on quite a lot in rural areas. A couple of men posing as Kerry County Council septic tank inspectors called to a house in the Black Banks area of Brosna last year. Only for being spooked by the arrival of a fuel delivery truck we can only guess how far their unfinished business would have taken them.
