As I mentioned here over the past few weeks,  the RTÉ Radio 1traditional music programme, The Rolling Wave is celebrating the music of Sliabh Luachra and remembering two great fiddle-players from this area. The first two programmes were dedicated to the late Paddy Cronin by means of a tribute concert which took place in the Community Hall in Miltown Malbay in July 2006.

Tonight, August 17th and next week August 24th at 10pm on both nights, the Rolling Wave will remember the late Denis Murphy who died in April 1974. These will be a different programme format to the two on Paddy Cronin.  They will mark the 40th anniversary of his passing by way of a two part documentary entitled ‘Memories of Denis Murphy.’

Friends, family and fellow musicians will remember Denis and tell the story of his life and music. The style of the Denis Murphy programmes – first broadcast in two parts in August 1995 – follows that of the Patrick O’Keeffe documentary also done by Peter Browne previously.

The Rolling Wave, presented and produced by Peter Browne, is on RTÉ Radio One on Sundays at 10pm and is repeated on RTÉ Lyric FM on Mondays at 7pm.
