This week’s Friday Favourite / Postcard from the Past takes us back, not too many years, to the time when aspects of Kerry Community Games were conducted at the Castleisland Desmonds GAA grounds.

This week’s look-back concerns a Kerry Community Games Gold Medal winning Rounders team from Castleisland.

Because tomorrow, Saturday, August 23rd marks the start of National Heritage Week I will post a rare collection of old photographs of Castleisland and its people from bygone ages.

The photographs were given to me recently by Gina McElligott and I will need the help of many of the older people in the community here in order to put names and approximate dates on them.

There will be a lot of people who will instantly recognise those involved and I’ll start with the ones I think may be easiest to identify.

That will be tomorrow mid-morning to mark the start of National Heritage Week.

Don’t forget that Maggie Prendiville will conduct a walk of the streets of the town and the River-Walk tomorrow evening, Saturday at 7pm and again at 2pm on Sunday afternoon. Outside Browne’s Bar is the designated meeting place on both occasions.

Immediately after the Sunday event you’re invited to step into Browne’s Bar where a demonstration of everything traditional from basket to bread and butter making will be laid on free for your National Heritage Week entertainment. -Enjoy !
