Friday’s weather looked anything but inviting to all but the absolutely determined Couch-to-5k participants. However, as the Angelus was close to striking in the spire of Saints Stephen and John, almost biblically, the rain stopped, the clouds parted and the finest of evenings unfolded. There was a great atmosphere about the place and the excitement among the ‘first-timers’ was palpable.
The 180 participants gathered at the start of the 5K from Rice’s Height on the point of 7pm. Official starter, James O’Leary announced that they were all to toe-the-line and prepare to go. Denny McSweeney sat into the lead car, pulled down the visor against the lowering sun, and they were away. There were the serious athletes and among them was the 72-year-old, Jim Langan from the Tullamore Harriers Athletic Club who supports every An Riocht event for many years.
An integral part of the starters were the Couch-to-5K graduates who had been preparing for this evening for the past 12 weeks and the casual walkers and a team of mentors from the host club. Their job is to encourage and cajole those lagging to get over that final few hundred yards and, of course, to get over the line. A total of 173 passed that finishing line and the other seven merely registered and completed their circuit and went straight home.
