Climbers from all over Munster and beyond will converge on Mangerton Mountain in Killarney for a huge charity event on Sunday, November 16th.

Climb4Life is aiming to attract both novice and experienced climbers in its ongoing bid to raise funds for the Build4life Cystic Fibrosis Charity.

The charity has been providing life saving services for people with lung illnesses at Cork University Hospital and facilities are being upgraded there constantly as funds become available.

A team of Castleisland locals are behind the logistics of the event and they’re looking for as many like-minded participants as they can muster as they strive to raise funds for this long sought facility.

They claim that the planned climb is suitable for novices but can also be a good day out for experienced climbers.

There are different ascents to the famous Punchbowl and people can choose to climb the ridge around the Punchbowl or take the longer route via the Horseshoe back to base.

Seasoned hill climber, Pa Courtney will organise experienced guides to take charge of the different groups on the climb.

“The weather on the day will decide how we divide up the groups but we are allowing five-hours to climb up and down,” said one of the local organiser, Peter Browne.

Groups departing from Castleisland are leaving from Browne’s Bar on Lower Main Street at 10am on Sunday, November 16th to start climbing at 11am. People traveling directly should try to be at Mangerton for 10.30am.

More details will follow with regard to parking, suitable clothing and other essential climbing advice. Participants will be reminded to bring adequate food and drinks supplies for the journey.

They will also be warned that temperatures are normally 10 degrees colder at the top and winds are much stronger there too.

Hot food and entertainment will be provided in Browne’s Bar in Castleisland from 5pm.

Participants are requested to register as soon as possible so the organisers can prepare for the numbers of people wishing to travel.

Groups from Tipperary and Cork who have family members with CF have already committed to ‘Climb4Life’ and the organisers are putting the pieces together for what they say will be a great day out.

To register, you can email: peterabrowne@gmail.com or by text to 087 2850844. Registration is €20 and can be paid on the day or just drop into Browne’s Bar at Lower Main Street, Castleisland any evening to register.
