Leaders of the Packs: A flashback to October 1988 and Croke Park: Mary Lane raises the All-Ireland Ladies Senior Football Cup on accepting it from National Ladies’ GAA President, Mary Wheatley after she led Kerry to victory over Laois to claim the county’s seventh All-Ireland victory in a row.

To November 2014 and to Corofin: Lorraine Scanlon, Knocknagoshel and daughter of Mary Lane – now Mary Scanlon, raises the All-Ireland Intermediate Cup after National President, Pat Quill presented it. Lorraine led a remarkable team of dedicated young women to today’s great victory over Clonbur of Galway. In 1988, Mary Lane’s team scored 2-12 to 3-3 for Laois while Lorraine’s team scored 2-11 to Clonbur’s 1-6 this afternoon.

Back in 1988 Mary Lane won the toss against Laois and scored a point on the day. On Saturday, daughter Lorraine won the toss and, you guessed it, she too scored a point on her big day.

A great and colourful crowd travelled from Castleisland for the game and they were rewarded with everything a thriller could throw up. It was only in the dying minutes that the travelling fans could breathe easily after a late scoring spree by Desmonds put the issue beyond doubt.

It was a great day for hill and valley and for Desmonds and Knocknagoshel GAA clubs in particular. What a way to wrap up a year’s work. We’ll have a report and loads of pictures later.
