The Castleisland based Sliabh Luachra Boxing Club has a new All-Ireland Champion after the weekend. Barry O’Connor from Killorglin ‘Pucked’ his way to winning the 39kg All-Ireland title at the National Stadium on Saturday morning.
“Barry was in was in top form all week. On  Thursday morning he boxed in the semi final wining all three rounds against the Ulster champion. That put him into his first All-Ireland final and only the club’s sixth since it reopened back in 2006,” said club PRO Paul Griffin.
Barry and his coaches, John O’Connell and Paul Griffin knew it was not going to be easy as his opponent, the Connaught Champion was last year’s beaten finalist.
“Even so, Barry showed no nerves and went to work on the southpaw from the start. It was a great contest and in the end he won on a split decision to become the 39kg All-Ireland Champion 2015 – to add to his Munster and Kerry titles, said the proud PRO.
“That’s some achievement for a boy who’s only boxing in his second season. Barry is a class act and he never misses a training session and always trains hard and puts in the extra work at home. All in the club are very proud of his achievements. This is the new club’s only Irish title so far but hopefully not the last. It was a great team effort and well done to all involved. Best of luck to our five female county champions who box in the Munster championships in Limerick on Sunday,” said Paul.
