A once-off  registration night for The Longest Day event will be held at Tom McCarthy’s Central Bar on this Wednesday evening / night, April 15th. from 6pm to 10pm.

On its first outing, on the longest day last year, the event attracted a huge crowd of participants and three or four time as many for that night’s party at and around  the bar.

This year’s Longest Day Challenge will be on Saturday, June 20th and its details were launched on March 9th. So, plans are well under way and the logistics in place for a repeat performance. It was all a greatly enjoyable experience for those concerned.

It wasn’t, however, all fun and games as the serious side of the event raised €20,300.00 for the Bumbleance Childrens’ Ambulance Charity and that was the point and purpose of the event.

In doing so they raised the one-day fundraising bar well above the level of expectation of most other like-minded groups. Based on the outright success of that highly organised if hugely experimental venture, don’t be surprised if they manage to put that bar a little higher this year.

Tom McCarthy, Georgina Fagan and Denny Greaney will be glad to see you at this Wednesday evening’s registration session.

This year’s chosen beneficiaries are:  The Jack and Jill Foundation, a charity which helps families with sick children under the age of four.
The Cliffords from Currow are one such family and that was the main reason why the charity was picked this year.
“Kerry Mountain Rescue will also benefit from the day as we were very dependent on their help and advice on the day last year.
The day itself  consists of a 40km cycle to Carrauntouhil, a climb of the mountain itself and then the 40km cycle back to Castleisland,” said event spokesman, Tom McCarthy at the launch on Monday evening. Then, to take advantage of The Longest Day, the Bikes ‘n’ Boots Barbecue will see out its final minutes and will, no doubt welcome in the following morning.
