Desmonds Book Date with St. Mary’s in Club Championship

Desmonds are through to the next round of the Intermediate Club Football Championship thanks to their 2-11 to 0-12 victory over neighbours, Currow in Castleisland on Sunday.This game certainly lived up to expectations and the big crowd present was treated to an intense close, hard-fought battle.

Desmonds were quick off the mark with points by Ciaran O’Callaghan, Mossie O’Connell, Maurice Hickey and Thomas Hickey. Mike Mc Cartyhy opened the scoring for Currow after nine minutes and this was followed by a pointed free from Daniel O’Shea.
Desmonds hit for their first goat after twelve minutes as Thomas  Hickey found the net with a penalty when Pat Fitzgerald was upended in the square. Cian O’Connor added a long-range point to put the home team well ahead. However, Currow hit back with two points from the hard working Mike Mc Carthy.
Referee, Denis Sayers was dishing out the cards to both teams and Maurice O’Connell received a questionable black and was replaced by Sean Lynch.
Cian O’Connor and Daniel O’Shea exchanged points and at this stage  Desmonds maintained a 1-6 to 0-5 lead. With two minutes on the clock Thomas Hickey finished a four man Desmonds move to the net and Desmonds went in 2-6 to 0-5 in front at the short whistle. Pa Hickey made it 2-7 for Desmonds early in the second half.  Again, Currow hit back with points from Daniel O’Shea and Mike McCarthy.
Sean Lynch put Desmonds seven points in front mid way through the half from 30 metres out.
Currow battled on. Daniel O’Shea with three points and Mike McCarthy with two more reduced the gap to just two points.
However, Desmonds finished the stronger as Thomas Hickey added three more points for a 2-11 to 0-12 victory for Desmonds. They will now meet St. Mary’s Caherciveen in the next round.
