The staff and pupils of Muire Gan Smál Presentation Primary School had a really big day recently when they were presented with the Irish Flag and a copy of the Proclamation by Sergeant Chris Hoare and Gunner Paul Horan from Cork’s army barracks.
This was done as part of the state’s commemoration of the 1916 Easter Rising.
Great excitement filled the school as the army jeep pulled up to the building and the two soldiers made their way into the hall.
Also present on the day were invited guests: Canon Eoin Mangan, Sr. Margaret O’Brien, Mayor Bobby O’Connell and Louise Nolan, chairperson of the parents’ association.
Grainne Spillane from 6th class was invited to read the fourth paragraph of the Proclamtion before the school stood and sang Amhrán na bhFiann.
“It was a joyous occasion yet a very historic one and we look forward to hoisting our flag along with all other schools on March 17th, 2016,” said Principal Leona Twiss.
