The late Mary Anthony McQuinn was one of a small team of tireless charity workers with which the town of Castleisland has been blessed for generations. There are many monuments to the countless hours of dedicated service and organisational duties they carried out when they could.
The photograph which accompanies this little tribute is typical of that dedication. There was a table full of jars of home-made jam in front of the late Phil O’Mahony and herself in the promotional photograph for the Castleisland Indoor Market of 2006. There would have been a team of local women involved in its making – but you may be sure they would have done their share.
In fact, the now famous Indoor Market began in Mary Anthony’s parents’ shop on Main Street in the autumn on 1973 or so.
The market is a living, breathing monument to their dedication, as is the Glebe Lodge Residential Centre it helped to fast-tracked from blue-print to reality. Mary Anthony McQuinn and her little team were behind the raising of every penny of it. May God be good to her.
