I used to include a photograph or two from the vaults in a series included here a couple of years ago. The Friday Favourites / Postcard from the Past was indeed a favourite.

While I didn’t abandon the notion entirely, it often got shouldered off the pitch when other stuff demanded space and time.

And, anyway I’m always in and out of the vaults – which are actually made up of old shoe-boxes full of envelopes and negatives – for many other reasons.

Recognisable Link

Anytime an event occurred with a recognisable link to the past, I tend to go headlong into the boxes and find myself ankle deep in a wonderful world of little celluloid strips on which moments of time are frozen for eternity – whatever that is.

These vaults and the said visits are notorious thieves of time and I have just spent a good streak of this afternoon there.

However, it’s never a waste of time and, with finding what I’m after, I come across the odd gem that seems to say – Take me Out.

Course of Instruction

One such image is of a group of Scartaglin ladies who completed a course of instruction on the holistic approach to health, food and general well-being in the Heritage Centre in the village at the end of January 2003.

The group included: Mary Quilter, Mai Clifford, Joan Murphy, Anne Daly and Nora Lenihan. Second row from left: Joan Barrett, tutor; Sheila Riordan, Peggy O’Leary, Hannah Mai Murphy, Nora Daly and Joan Kerin. Back from left: Mary Tangney, Mary O’Sullivan, Sheila McSweeney, Joan Fitzgerald, Hannah Bastible, Bernadette Adair and Maureen Cronin.

Little Moments

This may not herald a return of the Friday Favourite for now but it’s one of those little moments in time laying there and which sees the light of day every now and again. I hope it will bring back memories to the families of the women in the photograph.

There’s been a lot of uisce faoin droichead since 2003.
