Desmonds Secure Division 1 Status with Home Draw

Desmonds senior men secured their Division 1 status for next season with a home draw against Milltown/ Castlemaine.

By Gerdie Murphy

The visitors opened the scoring in the first minute with a free from Jonathan O’Sullivan. This was replied to by Desmonds with points from Kieran Brennan and a free from goalkeeper, Steven Bartlett.

The visitors’ corner-back, Paul Carroll came up to add his name to the score board and to level matters at two points each.

This was followed by a good passage of play from Desmonds. Pat Fitzgerald scored a point followed by a goal from a well worked move and Tomás Lynch put his name on the Desmonds scorers’ list.

At Full Flow

With Desmonds now playing at full flow we saw scores from: Tomás Lynch, Steven Bartlett and Micheál Walsh. Stan Divane had a great chance of a goal at this stage but drove it over the bar.

Milltown/Castlemaine responded with scores from Donal Dennehy and Shane Murphy. This left the scores at 1-08 to 0-6 in favour of Desmonds at half time.

The visitors upped the pace after half time and we saw scores from play by Pa Wrenn and Cathal Moriarty.

Soon after, Shane Murphy burst through the Desmonds defence to score a great goal and to alter the look of the scoreboard to 1-09 apiece.

With the light ever fading came scores from Donal Dennehy and Cathal Moriarty scoring a point each from frees. It was beginning to look like Desmonds were going to lose their fourth game in row.

Two Great points

But, credit to them, they fought back after introducing subs, Cathal Hanifin and Marc O’Connor and they played very well and Hanifin scored two great points from play.

Desmonds full forward Graham O’Connor got a lovely score from play at this stage and the home point and division 1 status was secured.

Jermiah Hayes drove a penalty over the Desmonds cross bar and this was to see the game finish in a draw at 1-13 each. Desmonds remaining game is away to Dingle
