The death has occurred of Marion Fitzmaurice, (85) of 104 Main Street, Castleisland on August 24th 2016, peacefully at home in the most wonderful care of her sister Doris.

Sadly missed by her beloved sister Doris, her many cousins, neighbours and friends.

Marion received a presentation from the late Castleisland Parish Choir director, Sr. Rita Donegan for her services to the choir in October 1998. The presentation marked Marion’s 50th year of association with the choir.

The late Marion Fitzmaurice along with her sister, Doris were well known to generations of school children as grocery and sweet shop owners at 104 Upper Main Street.

Their little shop, typical of its time, also included a public bar behind the grocery. It was here that my late friend, PJ Luddy and myself shared our first couple of mediums. We were on our way home after a hurling match and thought we’d celebrate with a drink and be all grown up.

We might have got the shins and fingers walloped off us up at the field but it was nothing to the interrogation we got from the sisters before they put the full glasses down on the counter in front of us – and it was only the one we had. It was only the one we got.

May God be good to Marion.
