Scoil Mhuire, Kilmurry National School is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its opening with the launch of a special issue, commemorative calendar.

The calendars, which are in great demand, are flying out of their boxes and over 200 were sold just after arriving at the school earlier this week.

“As there were only a limited number of copies printed, it is highly recommended that you get a copy to avoid disappointment and while the dwindling stocks last. This is a once off edition and it will not be reprinted,” said a spokesperson for the school’s parents’ association.

Centre of Education

“Opened in 1976, Kilmurry National School continues to be the centre of education for the children of the Cordal area for the last forty years.

“Over the last few years we have produced a calendar each year in order to promote the school, this has also proven to be a valuable fund-raiser each year.

“To part celebrate the 40th anniversary of the school, it was decided at a parents’ association meeting last September to do something special with this year’s calendar. The school itself will host its own celebration in the new year.

“An appeal was sent out looking for school photos to be included in this year’s calendar. The response from the pupils both past and present was amazing.

A Great Help

“Retired Principal, Ina Horgan was also a great help as she provided a large selection of photos from her time here.

“Some of the photos we received date back as far as the early1920s and we also have some photos from Reaglass and Glountane national schools included. Both schools were amalgamated with Kilmurry when they closed.

“As the project grew it became more like a photo album than a calendar and that’s part of its great appeal,” said the spokesperson.
