Desmond succumbed to a 14 point home defeat at the hands of Rathmore at the weekend in Round 6 of the county league.

Rathmore got off to a great start in the second minute of the game when Desmonds conceded a own goal and it was going to be a hard evening for the home side.

Strong Breeze and 11 Points

Rathmore played the first half with a very strong breeze and this resulted in them scoring 11 points. Mark Reen contributed five of these with two from George O’Keeffe and three from Dean Fitzgerald with John Moynihan adding one.

Desmonds scored 1-3 in this half with Cian Hickey O’Connor getting their only goal from a great pass from Pa White and two points from Cian O’Connor and one from Tadhg Walsh.

However, there was little the home side could do and we saw the scoreboard read 1-3 to 1-11 to Rathmore at half time.

Four Unanswered Points

In the second half Rathmore opened the scoring with four unanswered points from play to now lead 1-14 to 1-3.

Then we saw Rathmore’s man of the match, John Moynihan scoring the first of his three goals from play in the fifth minute – and he followed it up with goals in the 10th and 21st minutes of the game.

At half time, Desmonds had introduced club captain Thomas Hickey to the game after a long layoff through injury.

Hickey’s presence made a massive difference as he laid off a great pass to Graham O’Connor to slot it pass the Rathmore keeper Shane Ryan.

A Goal and Point in Two Minutes

Thomas Hickey also scored a point and a goal in the next two minutes and Desmonds were now on 3-4 but Rathmore kept adding points from Mark Reen, Colm Kelly Dean Fitzgerald, Donnacha McCarthy and John Moynihan.

Desmonds scored only two more points from Hickey and Patrick Horan and we saw them finish the game on 3-7 to Rathmore’s 4-18.
