The Bonn / Doherty Sinn Féin Cumann in Castleisland will commemorate the tragic events of July 10th 1921 on the coming Saturday evening, July 8th at 7:30pm.

A colour party will march from the Old Railway Car Park to the monument on Rice’s Height. There, Cllr. Toireasa Ferris will deliver an oration and a wreath will be laid in memory of the fallen Irish Volunteers: Jack Flynn, Jack Prendiville and Richard Shanahan.

Den Prendiville’s Vivid Account

At last year’s event Cllr. Ferris read from Den Prendiville’s vivid account of that deadly battle which raged throughout the town on that fateful night.

The late Mr. Prendiville’s brother, Jack was one of those killed on that night.

She also stressed the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by the likes of the men being honoured.

Amhrán na bhFiann

She complimented the Bonn / Doherty Cumann for its input and the gathering – which included relatives of those active at the time – for playing its part in the event.

The evening was brought to a close by Noel O’Mahony’s playing of Amhrán na bhFiann. Noel also led the colour party through the town in the lead up to the short ceremony at the monument.Contact-banner
