Castleisland Positive Mental Health Week will run all the coming week from Monday, October 9th. to Saturday, October 14th.

Kerry Mental Health Committee member, Kate Shanahan explained what people can expect from the week and its free courses at various locations throughout the town from Monday to Saturday.

“We’re bringing a big programme here to Castleisland for mental health week from the 9th to the 14th of October.

We’re working closely with the committee and the HSE to bring a range of courses about mental well-being to the town.

“This is a pilot programme for Kerry and hopefully next year it can be spread out to other towns,” said Kate.

The events and running order for the week is as follows:

Wellness Recovery Action Plan

The programme for the Monday 9th and and Tuesday 10th includes a two-day Wellness Recovery Action Plan or WRAP.

The plan was developed by Mary Ellen Copeland. It is a structured system for monitoring uncomfortable and distressing feelings and behaviours.

Then, through planned responses it tackles reducing, modifying or eliminating them.

It also includes plans for responses from others when you cannot make decisions, take care of yourself and keep yourself safe.

This course is a two- day workshop operated by Kerry Mental Health Association. You will receive a certificate on completion.

Time : 10am – 4pm. The venue is the St Vincent De Paul Rooms, Church Street, Castleisland.

Tuesday, October 10th.

One Good Coach: Promoting Young People’s Mental Health With Jigsaw Kerry.

This 50 minute presentation is aimed at adults who coach or train young people in a wide variety of sports.

Participants will gain a greater understanding of the importance of their role as One Good Adult, whilst learning how to promote and support young people’s mental health in your role as a coach. You will learn about Jigsaw Kerry and how people can access the service.

It’s time to Start Talking

A Youth Mental Health Workshop With Jigsaw Kerry

This 40 minute workshop will be delivered to students in the three post primary schools in Castleisland throughout the week.

Digital Citizen Online Awareness Seminar

Castleisland Interagency Youth Forum in conjunction with the three local post primary shools are holding a Digital Online Awareness Seminar for Students on October 5th. Content includes: Cyber Bullying; Child Exploitation;  Pornography and much more.

Wednesday, October 11th

SOS Wellness Workshop With Suicide or Survive

This workshop aims to help you understand, take charge of and responsibility for your own mental health.

Topics to be covered include: relaxation and stress management, the relationship between thoughts and emotions and how to develop a daily wellness plan and toolkit.

Thursday, October 12th.

Supporting young people’s mental health With Jigsaw Kerry

This a one hour workshop designed for parents, guardians and other adults interested or concerned about young people’s mental health.

You will gain an understanding of the key issues impacting on the mental health and wellbeing of young people whilst gaining an understanding of how to recognise some of the signs that a young person may be struggling with.

Increase your knowledge of the supports available in your local area.

Saturday, October 14th

Coffee and Chit-Chat Coffee Morning

Castleisland Branch of Kerry Mental Health Association presents a morning of tea / coffee, chat and networking.

The occasion is an opportunity to meet different people working in the area of Mental Health.

Time : 12pm – 3pm

Venue: Second Chance Charity Shop, Upper Main Street Castleisland, Co Kerry.

This is a free event and all are welcome.
