The Abbeyfeale Harriers began their annual charity hunt festival in Scartaglin yesterday, Wednesday, February 14th when they gathered at Lyons’ Bar for a day of hunting.

It was a day they dedicated to two men who would have been in their element in the company of men and hounds and the prospect of the open countryside.

Dedicated to Two Fallen Huntsmen

The events of the day were dedicated to the memory of lifelong huntsmen, John O’Connor from Scartaglin and Anthony Cronin from Castleisland.

The North Cork based, Carraigshane Harriers provided the hounds on the occasion.

Huntsmen and hounds gathered in the village on a morning that promised nothing in terms of weather but delivered a crisp and dry day and ideal conditions for the opening hunt of the 2018 festival.

Came From All Parts

They came from all parts of North Cork, West Limerick and South Kerry.

Today, Thursday, February 15th. the festival moves to Co. Limerick for a joint hunt with Rooves Bridge Harriers and Rockfield Harriers and  they’ll be based at Shanahan’s Bar, Strand.

Hunt in Knocknagoshel

The final meet will be on Friday, February 16th at O’Connor’s Bar in Knocknagoshel between Tory Harriers and Mullinavat and District Harriers.

The hunts support The Irish Cancer Society and the late John O’Connor and Anthony Cronin would approve of that too.
