Desmond’s Minors go Down to Churchill – and Other News

Desmond’s minors were defeated by Churchill in the county league final on Saturday evening in Austin Stack Park by 2-13 to 1-10.

The team members were a little nervous from the start and Churchill opened the scoring with a point from Liam O Donnell.

After three minutes this was cancelled out by two points from Danny Hickey. Three frees from Paul Buckley restored Churchill’s lead but a point from a free by Hickey kept us in touch.

Kept in Touch

A Damien Doherty goal after 15 minutes and two points within five minutes extended their lead although we kept in touch with pointed frees from Danny Hickey and Adam O’ Donoghue. At half time Churchill lead by 1-6 to 0-5.

The teams exchanged points after the break.  Desmonds began to dominate possession and the game ignited with a great point from Luka Brosnan after a fine catch from Tadhg O’Shea and a well executed goal by Adam O’Donoghue.

Penalty Saved

The game now entered its decisive stage. Desmonds were awarded a penalty after Ethan Reidy was fouled.

Unfortunately, Danny Hickey’s kick was saved in the 15th minute and Churchill responded with a point from Liam O’Donnell and a well struck goal by Jason Mortimer after a great run through the defence.

Desmonds battled on and after another Hickey point when the referee failed to apply the advantage rule and disallowed a Desmonds goal after 20 minutes.

Team With Potential

The team could have scored 2-3 in those critical 15 minutes but Churchill kicked four points  to seal a six point win.

Great credit is due to a team with potential and to their management team of Willie Dom O’ Connor, Martin Downey and Domo Lyne.

The Maine Valley Post has, is and always will be a free resource for the people of the locality and its wider diaspora.

When we started in 2013, the intention was to be a weekly, online newsletter. Over time, the site has evolved into a much different beast with multiple updates on a daily basis.
Because of its nature as a digital publication, it brings with it certain expenses: computers and cameras that require updating and maintenance; internet hosting and access; to say nothing of the time and hard work that goes into the site. It all adds up…
Our online community has always been our greatest asset and a vocal supporter of the Maine Valley Post since day one.
