Castleisland Members’ Golf Club’s, Lady Captain, Maryann Downes is thoroughly enjoying her tenure at the helm at Tulligubeen.
More so after she has put the rigours of her ‘captain’s day’ behind her on Sunday. The Brosna native is only a few months into the role and, in spite of the odd bit of stressfulness here and there, it’s all going in the right direction for her and her companions in the ladies club.
Record Entry
A total of 120 players turned up for her captain’s prize day and the record books at the club may have a new entry at number one.
“Sunday was an amazing day for me and all here and I’m so thankful to everyone who gathered around me in the run-up to and during the day and anyone who helped in any way,” said Maryann during the week.
“I’d like to thank all who played on Sunday and those who donated gifts and prizes. The kind words and encouragement from colleagues and family members and all who helped with the drinks reception – before and after – are all greatly appreciated.
Leaps and Bounds
“I am delighted to see the ladies club coming along in leaps and bounds and we have added a new ‘Category 5’ for newcomers with 36 plus handicaps. And we’d love to see more ladies giving golf a go. They’ll get all the support and encouragement they need to get started here.
“The ladies team is in the semi-final of the Noreen Moore Trophy competition and in the second round of the Joe Quinlan Trophy – so it’s going well,” said Ms. Downes in conclusion.

The Maine Valley Post has, is and always will be a free resource for the people of the locality and its wider diaspora.
When we started in 2013, the intention was to be a weekly, online newsletter. Over time, the site has evolved into a much different beast with multiple updates on a daily basis.
Because of its nature as a digital publication, it brings with it certain expenses: computers and cameras that require updating and maintenance; internet hosting and access; to say nothing of the time and hard work that goes into the site. It all adds up…
Our online community has always been our greatest asset and a vocal supporter of the Maine Valley Post since day one.
