Cordal B v Knocknagoshel – Junior County League Final

By: Tim O’Donoghue

The Division 8 Junior league final was played on Friday night 10th August  in Cordal between the home side and our neighbours Knocknagoshel.

The home side is managed by Diarmuid O Ciardubhain and the mall side by Eamon Walsh. Both men had battles on the field of play and now are battling on the management side .

Quick Fire Start

It was the Knock team which got off to a flying start but the home side came out of the blocks firing with Ger Byrne and Micheál Cahill matching up on the Knocknagoshel danger men.

With Billy Cronin and Mossie Enright delivering the goods from midfield, Cordal raced into a 0-7 to 0-2 lead on the 20 minutes mark .

Scores came from the lighting quick Sean Walsh and Mike Flynn and a 45 from goalie Jason Cronin.

Further points from Niall Ó Ciardubháin and three frees from Cathal O’Donoghue made it seven points for Cordal.

The Knocknagoshel scores came from youngsters, John Bell and John Walsh.

Goal Boost

A high ball into Jonathan O’Donnell by Mossie Enright was punched into the net for a goal. A further two points by the same player and four more points before half time by Flynn and three from Cathal O’Donoghue made the score Cordal 1-13 to Knocknagosel 0-3 at the half-time whistle.

The Cordal’s youngsters come good. Mark and  Cathal O’Donoghue, Sean Walsh and Sean Breathnach kept the momentum going at the start of the second half.

Cordal effectively finished the battle off early in the half with a bursting break by Mike Flynn when he laid off a pass to Padraig O Connell and he hit a cracker of a shot into the net from 20 yards. to make it 2-13 to 0-3 after five minutes.

Cleared the Bench

Domo cleared his bench after this with the introduction of Pa Naughton, Thomas Reidy, John Mannix, Colin Poolman and Paul O’Connor throughout the half.

Knocknagosel tried hard throughout the game but the early loss of Mike Walsh and John Bell through injury didn’t help matters for them .

Final Minutes and Scores

The final five points were scored by Pa Naughton, Niall Ó Ciardubháin and man of the match the impressive Cathal O’Donoghue added three more points to bring his tally to nine.

David O’Donoghue from Knocknagoshel scored a late penalty and a John Walsh point and the last point of the game from Dylan Curtin brought the final tally Cordal 2-18 To Knocknagosel 1-5.

Lifted the Shield

A delighted Daniel O’Connor lifted the junior shield with his uncle Big D Dermot Flynn.

Daniel thanked Knocknagoshel for a sporting game and all the Cordal players and supporters who followed the team throughout the campaign.
