National Athletics Gold for John O’Connor

Pictures from the University of Limerick Sports Campus on Sunday show the flying and happy John O’Connor racing over the line to become All-Ireland Community Games U-14 X 100m Gold Medalist – and later with his medal.

Last May, An Ríocht AC athlete and first year student at St. Patrick’s Boys’ Secondary School, John O’Connor had accumulated a haul of four prestigious gold medals.

John had won gold in the minor boys 100m and 200m in the North Munster Athletics Track and Field Championships that month.

Track and Field

The Castleisland teenager claimed the 100m in a time of 11.7 seconds and the 200m in a time of 25.32 seconds.

He won gold in the 60m North Munster Indoor Championships in Nenagh earlier in the year and followed that with gold in the 100m Kerry Colleges Athletics Track and Field at An Ríocht AC in early May.

News Just In

And the news just in is that John’s great year is turning into a golden harvest as he has just done what he does best at the All-Ireland Community Games finals at the University of Limerick Sports Campus on Sunday.

It was just a matter of time but, as of yesterday, John O’Connor is now the 2018 All-Ireland Community Games Gold Medalist – claiming the title in the Boys U-14X100 Metres.

Powered to Victory

Carrying his county’s colours, John powered to victory at the ALDI sponsored games held in the University of Limerick Sports Campus over the weekend.

A son of Noreen and T.J. O’Connor, John  won his heat along with the semi-final and, of course, the final on his way to his most precious medal to date. There will be more.

Summing up his achievements earlier this year his school principal, Denis O’Donovan hailed John as ‘a special talent with a very bright future ahead of him.’

Wasn’t he right?
