It’s Official: Gary’s gold medal certified at the games in Abu Dhabi this morning.

“A Gold Medal for our Gary. Words can not describe the feeling of pride and happiness I feel right now. Well done to Team Ireland you have made your country proud,” was how Gary O’Sullivan’s family members reacted to his gold medal performance in the Shot Put at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi this morning.

Castleisland woke to the great news this morning as Abu Dhabi is four hours ahead of Ireland.

Kerry Stars Member

Gary, from Castleisland and a member of the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club, went out there as part of the the over 90 strong Irish team.

At the presentation of the proceeds of a fundraising quiz last week at Tom McCarthy’s Bar, Gary said he was confident that he would bring home a medal to Castleisland and was looking forward to getting over there and getting on with it.

A World Champion

Now he’ll be coming home at a world champion and here’s hoping that he’ll get the welcome he deserves.

Gary was joined at the start of the games in Abu Dhabi during the week by his mom, Mag and nan, Mary with his aunt Stacey who actually volunteered at the Special Olympics in Athens in 2011. A Happy St. Patrick’s Day for sure.

Congratulations Gary ! A World Champion ! As a local man said one time: ‘There wouldn’t be many of them in a dozen.’
