The Fairtraders of Castleisland Community College won the Eco Community Award at the Eco Unesco’s Young Environmentalist Awards in The Convention Centre, Dublin.
The Fairtraders were one of 322 projects that entered this year and a shortlist of 100 travelled to Dublin for the final.
Only Kerry Secondary School
They were the only secondary school in Kerry to win an award. They presented in UCC at a regional Eco Den, a Dragons’ Den style semi-final where they pitched their project to a panel of judges in order to secure their spot at this year’s showcase and awards ceremony.
Fairtrade Marketing and Promotion
The award received was in recognition of the marketing and promotion of the Fairtrade brand and how it protects the environment.
Fairtrade standards ensure that environmentally sustainable practice is adhered to at farm level e.g.
Fairtrade bananas protect the environment as no harmful chemicals are sprayed on them; in Nicaragua, coffee is grown alongside trees thus making the soil more fertile.
Creativity, Innovation and Enthusiasm
The students were praised for their fantastic creativity, innovation and enthusiasm in their approach to protecting the environment and promoting environmental awareness amongst their peers.
This is the third year in a row that a Castleisland Community College team has won a national environmental award at the Eco Unesco finals.
Well done to the students and their teachers and particularly to Doreen Killington whose passion in life is Fairtrade and environmental issues.
