Death of My Hero
The following is an extract from a moving tribute to a hard-working hillside farmer by a son who worked side-by-side with him for many years.
Former World Mountain Running Champion, John Lenihan took to his Facebook page and poured the words of admiration and love onto the screen under the heading: Death of My Hero:
We could see this coming over the past few months but it still churns the stomach when you get woken up early morning with the phone call that your Dad has died.
William Lenihan was certainly my hero as he worked tirelessly on a rugged hillside farm to provide for his family, the pick axe and shovel were rarely out of his hands.
Many around here were astounded when back in the 70s he took on the mammoth task of building a boundary ditch across a mile long section of bog with a hay knife and pitchfork – a task that lasted several months.
But, like everything he took on in life he achieved his goal and finally reached his destination. While he worked hard over six days a week, Sundays were for the bare essentials of milking the cows etc and this usually left time to go visit his neighbours for a chat and indeed one or two evenings a week he would have a neighbour or sometimes two or three neighbours call for a visit and quite often this could turn into a late night of playing Rings and sometimes to a lesser extent a few games of Whist.
There was a close knit community of neighbours here who worked and socialized with my Dad people such as John and Tom Blennerhassett, James Lyons, John and Richard Bernard, Danny Sullivan and Jack Collins
But for many years now my dad was the only surviving member of that group of friends and this left a huge void in his life but he loved to speak about the memories he had of that era.
