Castleisland – A Second Home

Castleisland was like a second home to Darren and his deep interest and knowledge of the livestock trade and its intricacies meant that he was truly at home here on busy mart days.

Castleisland’s annual horse fair was another day of pilgrimage to The Island for him.

“He had a great head for numbers and for sorting out cattle between the buyers and the sellers – and that’s a situation you’d want to have your wits about you with everything happening so fast around you.

“Darren never ruffled anyone in the course of his work here. He got on well with all he met and they knew they could depend on him when it came to their vital transactions,” said a spokesperson at Castleisland Co-Op Mart.

Never Long on the Road

After a busy day at the mart Darren would saunter away up town and enjoy a couple of quiet pints before hitting the road for Castlemaine with his trademark hazel stick.

He was never very long on the road as he was so well known and liked by the many he met in the course of his dealings here.

May God be good to him.
