The junior and senior basketball teams from Castleisland Community College are on a winning streak with both qualifying from the semi-finals of the South West division of the All Ireland A Post Primary Schools Basketball League.

Both teams remain undefeated to date having secured wins against Coláiste Mhuire Ennis, Mounthawk Tralee, Cresent Comprehensive Limerick and Presentation Castleisland.

Team Connections from Scart

There is a strong connection between the two teams with two sets of sisters – all from Scartaglin – playing for the junior and senior teams.

Tara Kerin and Mollie Mahony play for both teams whilst their older sisters, Emma Kerin and Abbie Mahony play for the senior team.

Last year all basketball inter-school games were suspended whilst two years ago the junior team had reached the semi- finals of the Post Primary Schools Basketball South West A League Competition and the Post Primary Schools Basketball Cup Competition.

Cancellations During Lock-down

The games unfortunately were cancelled due to national lock-down.

The principal, team managers and trainers made the decision not to enter the two teams into the All Ireland Post Primary Schools Cup competition as both of these teams consist mainly of exam classes of third and sixth year students.

Waiting with Anticipation

Principal Teresa Lonergan said it was felt that in the best interest of the students it was not advisable to have them missing out on more tuition time giving the amount of time lost already due to the lock-downs.

It is with great anticipation that the teams await for their next games due to be played later this month under Denny Porter, trainer and team managers, Anna Kerin and Yvonne Rice.
